Healthy Apple Turnover Bites

Apple Turnover

This was one of those recipes that suddenly popped into my head and I just HAD to try it. It was also one of those recipes that could have gone horribly wrong. But sometimes, the the most simple of recipes taste the best. Not only is this recipe super simple, but it tastes absolutely amazing! Most store bought turnovers are jam-packed with so much sugar and artificial ingredients that, despite tasting good while going down, they’ll leave you feeling pretty darn sick after. *ahem.. McDonalds Apple Turnover…ahem* Well, my Apple Turnovers are only 118 calories each and have no processed sugar added!

I also love that these are so portable and “finger friendly”. They make the perfect appetizer or dessert for your next holiday get-together, saving you time in the process. Be prepared for lots of recipe requests. =)

Healthy Apple Turnover Bites

Prep Time: 15 minutes

Cook Time: 20 minutes

Total Time: 35 minutes

Yield: 24 turnovers

  • 1 box puff pastry sheets, thawed (2 sheets, 1lb total)
  • 2 medium apples, diced (~224g)
  • 1 tsp lemon juice
  • 1 tbsp coconut sugar (could sub with brown sugar)
  • 3 tbsp xylitol
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • sprinkle of nutmeg
  • 1 egg, beaten

  1. Preheat over to 350*
  2. Line a large cookie sheet with a Silpat (my cooking lifesaver) or parchment paper.
  3. Combine diced apple with lemon juice, coconut sugar, xylitol, cinnamon and a sprinkle of nutmeg, mix well
  4. Cut each sheet of puff pastry into 24 squares. Lay 12 of the squares onto your cooking sheet and brush with egg mixture. (Tip: To prevent sticking, I like to keep a small bowl of water nearby to dip fingers in when handling the puff pastry dough)
  5. Add a small mound of your apple mixture onto of each square
  6. Cover each of the mounds with another square of dough, pressing down on the sides, to form your turnover
  7. Brush tops with egg mixture and cut a small slit atop each
  8. Bake for 20min or until golden brown on top
  9. Repeat for remaining pastry squares (recipe makes 24 turnovers in total and can easily be halved, by using only 1 sheet of pastry).
  10. Remove from oven and let cool on paper lined, wire rack
  11. Enjoy!
